Steps involved for making your system Dual boot (xp and linux) :
On December - 22 - 2008
Assuming no operating system is installed and if windows xp is installed follow step 2 only ,in this case you should have an partition of about 25gb free for linux installation.
* Take backup of all important datas as you may loose them.
Major steps:-
1. Follow Windows xp installation.
2. Linux installation with a boot loader (GRUB).

Steps involved for xp installation :-
- Insert the xp cd-rom in yor drive and choose cd to boot from.
- Xp Installation will continue t load it’s file finally it will come to a screen as shown below

Press Enter to Continue
- You will be taken to licence agrement press f8 to continue.
- Create partition for the disk create atleast 20 gb for xp 25 gb for linux and 1 gb for linux swap partition.
- Select first 20 gb partition to install windows xp.
- Follow the instructions that come … you will be asked to enter the serial no. and to select the time zone you are in and will be required to name your computer and set the administrator.
- After the installation is complete just install the drivers that came with your computer.
Steps involved for linux installation :-
- Boot your pc using the linux installation cd or dvd
- Choose the language options and area in which you reside.
- Select the options that define your hardware like ps2 or usb mouse or keyboard.
- When the disk partition option come just choose advanced options.
- You will see the dive structure of your hard disk choose the 25 gb drive that you created for linux installation and mark the drive as “/” (without quotes) it defines the root partition of the linux or unix operating system.
- Now choose the 1 gb partition and create the partiton using swap partition.
- Select the selected 25 gb partition for linux installation using the ext3 format.
- You will be asked simple options in some installation packages after it just follow them to complete the installation.
- Once the insallation is completer reboot your computer you will see the grub loader appears asking you to choose between xp and linux to boot from.
- Choose the os to boot from and enjoy the life with dual booting feature on your computer.
