GIGABYTES GV-R487D5-1GD Graphics Card with The ATI Radeon HD 4870

Hardcore gamers know that if you want the fastest possible frame rates, you need the speediest graphic cards available. With this crowd in mind, Gigabyte has recently announced the Gigabyte GV-R487D5-1GD graphics card—an ATI Radeon HD 4870-based, PCIe 2.0 x16 card with 1GB of 256-bit GDDR5 memory.

The GIGABYTE GV-R487D5-1GD features ATI TeraScale graphics engine, boasting teraFLOPS of GPU computing power with 800 stream processors and nearly one billion transistors, claims the company. Equipped with 1GB GDDR5 memory, the GV-R487D5-1GD is able to deliver nearly two times the memory bandwidth of the previous generation.It also supports dynamic contrast and enhanced DVD upscaling and capable of Blu-ray functionality with dual-stream picture in picture and one-cable connectivity.

In order to provide the best digital audio/video interconnection between a computer and display monitor or home-theater system, the GIGABYTE GV-R487D5-1GD is capable of outputting DispalyPort signals. The new generation DisplayPort interface supports higher resolutions, richer color depth, and increased refresh rate performance, delivering 10.8Gbps of bandwidth over previous generations of connectivity options such as DVI, LVDS and VGA. With added DisplayPort connectivity on the GV-R487D5-1GD, PC gamers are able to play all the latest games on their large-screen home theater displays, providing an audio and visual experience unmatched by any of today’s console gaming systems.

Gigabyte actually designed the GV-R487D5-1GD board itself. That combined with the fact that Gigabyte hasn’t published the clock speeds of the card, and it’s difficult to know if the card runs at the same clock speeds as the ATI reference design (GPU Core: 750MHz, memory: 1,800MHz) or perhaps faster. As with other Radeon HD 4870-based graphics cards, the GV-R487D5-1GD supports DirectX 10.1, Shader Model 4.1, and OpenGL 2.1.
