Posted by max On December - 10 - 2008

It was bound to happen, but we never imagined it was going to be so soon. Phandroid says that Sony Ericsson will release their first Android-based telephone in summer 2009.

Sony Ericsson has joined the Open Handset Alliance, the group of companies, including handset manufacturers and mobile carriers, committed to the Android open mobile platform. The manufacturer behind the Windows Mobile-based Xperia X1 (not to mention all those Walkman and Cyber-shot phones) says it’s jumping on Google’s Android bandwagon. Plus: Is Sprint inching closer toward its own Android handset!

“Sony Ericsson is excited to announce its membership of the Open Handset Alliance and confirm its intention to develop a handset based on the Android platform”, said Rikko Sakaguchi, head of creation and development at Sony Ericsson.

HTC, the current makers of the G1, will also come with their own Android cellphones in summer 2009. Not only model, but a whole portfolio, according to HTC exec Peter Frolund. And many other mobile phone manufacturers are already members, including Motorola, Samsung, LG and HTC.
